Adventure Time Tempera Resist

I'm doing a lesson plan with my 8th grade students using a tempera paint and india ink resist. They design and draw out two faces/characters, one on each side of a folded 9" x 12" page, and then add multiple layers of tempera paint in varying colors. Once there are 4+ layers and they are dry, they coat the whole surface in india ink. The ink sticks to the entire surface, but after it dries it will be washed gently with a spray hose and sponge to remove layers of ink/paint. The gaps they left in the paint allow the ink to stain the exposed paper, and the black areas remain even after the washing. After everything dries, it is laminated and then used as the cover of a 10 folio/single signature sketchbook. Students engage in drawing, painting, planning, designing, and bookmaking.
